The Golden Triangle,Chiang Rai; Thailand

The Golden Triangle

The Golden Triangle is located in Sop Ruak, a small town, which sits at the meeting point of the Thai, Burmese and Laos borders. Situated at the junction of the Mekong and Sop Ruak rivers some 18 miles north of Chiang Rai, The Golden Triangle is a popular tourist spot often visited on day trips from Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai. The Golden Triangle is nine miles upriver from Chiang Saen and long tail boat trips between the two towns are very popular.

Although The Golden Triangle is pretty much a tourist attraction, the views across the river to Laos and Burma are breath taking and there are several pleasant open-air restaurants which afford panoramic views. It is not possible to cross into either country at this point of the border and there are only a few structures in sight (on the Laos side). Nonetheless the spot has a little mystique for the first time visitor.

You can visit the nearby opium museum. There are some interesting displays depicting opium dens of old. There are plenty of stalls and shops along the sloping main road - mostly catering to tourist buses which call in all day long. Silver opium pipes are on sale everywhere you look along with the usual assortment of handicrafts, silk, postcards and so on. Most of what is on sale can be picked up in Chiang Mai for less so do not load up on "bargains". ( atthaitours.com )
